How Does Central Air System Work?

The first thing that needs to be mentioned about central air conditioners is that it does not create heat. Rather, it transfers heat from one area to the other that is from an area where it is less desirable to an area where it does not have much significance. The central air conditioners have a centralized duct system, an air handler, air supply system, air return duct, grilles and registers that circulates warmed air from the furnace or cooled air from the central air conditioning unit to various rooms in the house. It again sends back this air to the return duct and the process starts once again.

When it comes to central air conditioners it uses electrical energy and converts it to mechanical energy. Just like all other air conditioner, central air conditioners also has three parts, the compressor, the evaporator and the condenser. Central air conditioners which are typically packaged units, in these all the components are combined in a single outdoor unit and are placed outside the home on the ground or on the roof. The refrigerant that is the Freon circulates through the copper tubing that runs between these components. The refrigerant receives and releases heat as it raises and lowers in temperature. In the process it either changes to gaseous or liquid forms. The refrigerant is especially cold when it begins to circulate through the indoor coil.

As the air handler pushes warm air into the coil, the refrigerant absorbs so much heat that it gets converted into a gaseous form. In the gaseous form it travels towards the compressor which in turn pressurizes it through the outdoor coil which in turn jettisons the heat. There is also a fan present which helps in the dissipation of heat. The refrigerant then passes through an expansion device which in turn converts it into a low-pressure and low-temperature liquid and it returns to the indoor coil. This cycle continues as long as the central air conditioner is kept on.

Central air conditioners are rated in terms of Seasonal Energy Efficiency or SEER. The higher is the SEER rating more is the efficiency of the central air conditioners. As far as the types of central air conditioners are concerned, there is a whole range of different varieties but for residential purposes there are mainly two types, they are the split system air conditioning and the packaged air conditioning units.

However, in order to ensure that the central air system functions well, it is important to take good care of it. For instance, cleaning the filters at regular intervals is of utmost importance. This is because when dirt and debris gets clogged into the filters, the system has to work harder to emit the desired amount of cold air. As a result, the wear and tear on the machine will be higher and the chances of it malfunctioning will increase.
